Don't forget the year-end meeting on Tuesday December 30th @ 7pm. They will be rushing the Service Award for the Fireman through that night. Also on January 14th is the organizational meeting prior to the regular board meeting @ 7pm.
ReplyDeleteHey Haisho, what do you mean by RUSHING THROUGH? This program has been gone over for months. Your not Mike Hannon in disquise?
ReplyDeleteRushed is trying to get it through prior to actual elected councilman are seated to make the decision and not 3 of the 5 having direct benefit from the program. Rushed is trying to have the referendum held during February or March in the heart of winter with little time for people to be fully aware of the true cost of the program and when they know that it is more likely for people that want it to come out and vote than those that would oppose it if held in November. Rushed is never once at any town board meeting mentioning the costs to residenants a single $ figure. The first time a figure was ever mentioned was at the last meeting when they wanted to pass it then. (This is fact, watch or listen to the tapes or minutes)
ReplyDeleteAmong other questions that I have, I want to take a look back through the Town Board Meeting minutes to see if the volunteer firefighters have officially requested that a service award program be put in place.
ReplyDeleteI also want to see what will happen to such a program after its 10 or 20 year period - can the Town sustain this program indefinitely?
I want to see more research done on this and presented to the public BEFORE it is voted on by the board. I want to know how it is not a conflict of interest to have board members who will directly benefit from this vote on it. I want to know why this is the best program for our town. I want to know how this will raise membership. Lastly, I want to know if this will set a precedent for other volunteer organizations in the town.
ReplyDeleteIt was stated that the service award program does not increase volunteering as they had hoped. It does retain people, but hasn't substantially help to get people to volunteer which is the main problem. So this seems to be a program just to reward the long timers that are already members of the company.
ReplyDeleteAmong other questions that have swirled in my head: could the program sustain an increase in members? What happens if the number of members is dramatically reduced over the next few years - does the town pay less? And, is the "service award" payment considered taxable income? I think the amount the town will pay per year is something like 75K or 98K (one based on 10 years, the other based on a 20 year payment plan). Doing some fancy math, why not just pay each fire fighter a stipend of ~$185/month (that's $98000/44 fire fighters / 12 months per year).
ReplyDeleteAhh, thinking outside of the box. What a welcome relief. Yes, what if....? That's what we need, new ideas, better options. I think we all want to show our gratitude in some way but think that the current form/plan is not the correct one for our town.
