Being Green

Does anyone else use reusable shopping bags for groceries and other errands?

I try to, but half the time I forget them in the car.

  1. I do but it is hard to be retrained to do so. I leave them in the car so when I pop into the store, I have them. The small ones you can buy from stores were a pain, they didn't hold much at all. They are great for older people who can't carry heavy loads though. The ones I use are from Waste Management. They were giving them out over a year ago and I liked the size-big and deep-so I called and asked for more. They are black and dirt doesn't show either. I find that the five I have is more than enough for my needs. You are right though, the trick is to remember to bring them from the car into the store.

  2. I just got a fantastic one from Univera that's green and folds up and snaps closed - small enough to carry in a purse. The black Wegmans bags have also held up to some heavy use. I've been disappointed by the red bags from Target - it ripped!

  3. I think it is agreat idea for a business to give them out, if they can afford to. It shows that they are behind the effort to reduce waste and it beats some of the corny things they tend to give out. I'm all for it, and it should catch on as more try it out. Today I was in Springville Tops and I saw five people with reusable bags at the checkout which I think is fantastic. I hate those plastic bags everyone uses now. I do miss the brown bags with handles, they were so great, but not good for the environment. My son's teacher made them cover a book for a grade early in the year and it had to be done with brown bag material. I had to run out and ask for a bag just so he could get the grade. What a pain!

  4. LOVE the bags from WM and I too called and asked for more! I only shop every 2 weeks (oo so) and use 4 or 5 of the WM bags and 2 or 3 of the smaller ones. Also bought an insulated one from Wal Mart that keeps my frozen stuff cold. It was a pain when I first started this 2 years ago but is now a routine. As soon as I unload groceries, they are re-packed into one of the smaller bags and put back in the car. What a great example to my children and... more groceries can fit in them so I don't have to deal with 20 plastic bags with 5 items in each one! I also bag my own groceries when using them to optimize space (no offense to those who work in a store and DON'T throw stuff in haphazardly!)and to give those behind me in line a break. I wish stores would actually embrace the idea and make the checkout area more user friendly for the bagging - specifically Wal Mart and thier stupid round table deals! very difficlt to navigate!
