Raising Chickens?

Does anyone have recommenndations for good chicken breeds for the Southern Erie County climate? I'm considering getting some from a hatchery to raise for eggs and eventually dinner. No vegetarians in my house.

  1. Excellent idea to raise your own birds! I'd recommend New Hampshire or Rhode Island Reds. They're proven to be very hardy and capable of producing eggs throughout the winter. They're big too so if you order a batch of 25 straight run from a magazine you'll have around 12 roosters for eating. Have you considered the possibility of getting them through the Springville Auction?

Having spoken to a number of vegetarians, one of the main reason they refuse to eat factory meat is because of the antibiotics and artificial growth hormones pumped into the animals. Eating meat can be just as healthy as vegetarianism as long as you know where your meat comes from. Bon appétit!
