Community Service Math

2008's election saw 1400 go to the polls in Sardinia.

The average American watches 4 hours of television per week.

If each Sardinian of voting age volunteered four of those television watching hours to community efforts each month - in a school, with a neighbor in need, at a library, at local food pantries, local non-profits - that would equal 67200 hours in a year (4 hours per month x 12 months x 1400 people).

Say there's about 50 full work-weeks in a calendar year: that's 1344 hours/week, and at 40 hours/week, that would be the equivalent of nearly 34 volunteers working full-time to better the town of Sardinia and the surrounding area.

I don't like math, but I do like those numbers.

Is anyone else willing to commit to 4 hours/month? I'm sure there are many people in Sardinia who already contribute much more than 4 hours, but some of us need to start slow.

  1. When the snow melts in the spring I walk up and down the roads around my home and pick up all the garbage thoughtless drivers left along the roadside. I don't know if that counts as community service but it makes Sardinia a better place to live for everyone. When I'm at the Sardinia town park I pick up litter too. It's something so simple but it really can make a positive difference. Four hours a month getting exercise and improving the aesthetic of Sardinia - I'm willing to commit to that.

  2. Your 'Community Service Math' project was to say the least - interesting. I realize you are 'coming out of the closet' on town issues -but here is a short list of VOLUNTEER WORK done under the leadeship of our current Supervisor over the past 3 years by many residents
    1. Paint / refurbish the Community Center gym
    2. Plant flowers and spruce up the front of the Community Center
    3. Support our troops drive
    4. First Christmas Tree lighting and community party
    5. Labor Day in the Park event
    6. Cleanup numerous houses around town for the less fortunate
    7. Support the Fire Co. at the carnival with cooking, setup and breakdown
    8. Secure the sound system for town meetings and events
    9. Provide a more professional image at meetings with skirting at the front tables
    10. Community Cause at town board meetings with fresh baked goods, beverages and $$$$
    11. Provide the setup / breakdown of tables and chairs at meetings - until somone was hired
    last year

I'm sure there are some I've missed, but as you say "this is something the residents could be doing" - some are and have been doing just that. Trouble is in Sardinia, there is the nasty word POLITICS and with that goes JEALOUSLY!

Have a nice day and keep shoveling!
